βThe career of a young theoretical physicist consists of treating the harmonic oscillator in ever-increasing levels of abstraction.β
βEvery successful physical theory swallows its predecessor alive. But it does so by interpreting the concepts of the old theory in terms of the new, not the other way around. Thus our aim is not "the interpretation of quantum mechanics." It is the interpretation of classical mechanics.β

Sidney Coleman on Theory
βIt has been said, and wisely said, that every successful physical theory swallows its predecessors whole.β
Sidney Coleman on Mechanics
Sidney Coleman on Spontaneous symmetry breaking
βWe investigate the possibility that radiative corrections may produce spontaneous symmetry breakdown in theories for which the semiclassical (tree) approximation does not indicate such breakdown. The simplest model in which this phenomenon occurs is the electrodynamics of massless scalar mesons. We find (for small coupling constants) that this theory more closely resembles the theory with an imaginary mass (the Abelian Higgs model) than one with a positive mass; spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs, and the theory becomes a theory of a massive vector meson and a massive scalar meson.β

David Derbes on Sidney Coleman
βSidney Coleman was not only a leader in theoretical particle physics, but also a hugely gifted and dedicated teacher. In his courses he found just the right balance between rigor and intuition, enlivened by wit, humor and a deep store of anecdotes about the history of physics. Very often these were first-hand accounts; if he wasn't a participant, he was an eyewitness.β
Jacques Distler on Sidney Coleman
βIf you haven't read his Erice Lectures, you don't know the heights that scientific writing can attain.β
Ken Lane on Sidney Coleman
βSteve Weinberg was giving the gauge seminar one Wednesday and was, as I recall nearly finished or just finishing his talk. Sidney had not arrived. So-Young Pi asked Steve a question and Steve replied (as I recall) βThatβs a good question. I donβt know the answer; I havenβt thought about it.β At that exact instant Sidney enters the room, hears Steveβs reply, heads for the coffee pot, and says βI know the answer; whatβs the question?β He was told the question, and he answered it. (Correctly, of course.)β
